Installing an Outdoor Lighting Fixture Can Change the Look of Your House

Outdoor lighting is a big part of the way your home looks at night.  If your out door light fixtures are old or in poor repair, they could be saying some things about your home that you'd rather they didn't.  Fortunately, this isn't a problem that requires an expensive or difficult solution.  Replacing an outdoor lighting fixture is one of the most effective – and simplest – ways you can dress up the exterior of your house.  It's inexpensive and easy for even amateurs to do.  Just be sure that you pay careful attention when you make the change.

The first step is to find the right outdoor light fixture for your home.  Be sure, when you go shopping, to keep the style and surroundings of your house in mind. Otherwise, you could end up with an outdoor light that looks great in the store, but just doesn't match your house.  Remember that while discount light fixtures may be cheap, they can also be of poorer quality, meaning that they'll start to lose their looks faster.  Try to find the right balance of thriftiness and quality when you buy an outdoor lighting fixture.

To replace your fixture, you may need a ladder.  If so, be sure to situate it in a solid location, so that it won't shift while you're working.  Remove the mounting screws on your existing light fixture.  For most outdoor lights, these are just two screws on either side of the mounting plate.  After you do this, be sure to turn off the power at the breaker or fuse.  Otherwise, you could risk a nasty shock.

Untwist the wire nuts that have been used to install your outdoor light fixture, and remove the wires.  Then, replace the wires of your new fixture and replace the wire nuts, paying careful attention to the order in which the old ones were installed.  Be sure that you twist like colored wires together, like black to black and white to white.  Then, just remount your new light fixture.  You may even be able to use the same screws that held the old one up.

Changing your outdoor light fixtures can be an inexpensive and easy way to give your home a face lift.  If you think your home is looking shabby, or your old light fixtures just don't do the job, consider a new outdoor light.  It can make all the difference in the appearance of your home.
