Have You Considered Outdoor LED Lighting?

Outdoor light is both a great security measure and a good way to be able to make use of your lawn and garden after dark.  It gives your home a better appearance by highlighting your favorite parts of the landscaping.  However, choosing the right outdoor lighting can be difficult.  There are lots of options on the market, especially as technology advances.  Here's some basic information to help you decide what options are the best for you.

First, you should decide why you want to use outdoor lighting.  There are two major types – task lighting and accent lighting.  Task lighting is that used for practical reasons.  For instance, food preparation, safe movement through your property, lighting changes between levels and making sure your property is secure. Accent lighting is meant to draw attention to specific locations in the landscape. Trees, sculpture, and similar objects are a good example.  Accent lighting can also draw attention away from areas you don't want to be seen, such as the clothesline, garage, or shed.

When choosing outdoor lighting, you'll need to decide on power source and light type.  There are two basic power sources available – solar power and household electricity.  Solar power allows you to avoid running wires, and lowers your power bill.  However, it can also be unreliable, especially if you live in an area that doesn't get a lot of direct sunlight.  Electric lights are a lot more reliable, but you will have to run wiring and conduit for them.  Fortunately, if you use a twelve volt system, you can run the lighting yourself.  Remember to follow instructions carefully to avoid overloading your system or hurting yourself if you choose the DIY route.

Bulb types include halogens and outdoor LED lighting.  Halogens have been around for a long time, and are the lights you probably think of when you consider outdoor lighting.  However, they use a lot of energy, the light from these bulbs tends to be yellowish, and they can become hot to the touch, making them a potential fire hazard.  Outdoor LED lighting, on the other hand, produces a much whiter light. It's also much cooler and cheaper to run, as the lights use less electricity and waste less of it as heat.  LED bulbs can be more expensive to purchase initially, however.

Recent changes in technology have made it much easier to buy and use outdoor LED lighting than in previous years.  LEDs, especially white ones, used to be very expensive to produce.  They're now a lot cheaper, making them much more feasible to use in outdoor lighting.  There's a very good chance, as these lights grow in popularity, that they'll soon replace halogen lamps as the outdoor lighting type of choice.  Of course, no matter which type of outdoor lighting you pick, it's important to be sure that it matches with your house and illuminates the correct locations.  Pick your fixtures carefully, and try out some lighting options with a flashlight before you install lighting.  That way, you'll get the best choice for your home.
