Lighting For Decks - Some Tips

After a long day on the road or at work, one of the best ways to relax is pulling up a chair and enjoying the night breeze on your personal deck.  With the right lighting for decks and design features, your deck could seem like its own paradise.

Choose carefully, though.  If you simply install deck features without thinking about it, you could end up with a deck that's cluttered and poorly lit.  Before you build your deck or make major alterations to it, draw up a plan, including furniture placement and where you'll put your lighting for decks.

Outdoor deck lighting is a specialized type of lighting - you can't just use any outdoor lights at all to produce the kinds of ambiance you want on your deck.  Look for unobtrusive recessed deck lights that can be mounted on the railings, steps, or deck floor itself.

No lighting for decks should be bright or poorly controlled enough to be seen in your neighbor's yard.  It will seem glaring from the deck, annoy your neighbors, and spoil your privacy.  That's why you should make sure to use specialty low voltage fixtures in the correct areas to produce the effect you want.

If you're hiring a contractor to put your deck together, remember to specify all your lighting requirements before construction starts, including any recessed deck lights or special voltages you need.  If you're assembling your own deck, it's important to go over the manuals and design guides to pick the perfect lighting for decks.  You may wish to make sure that lighting on your deck matches your home's exterior lighting, as many decks are extensions of the house.  Stand alone decks don't have this requirement, however.

Don't forget that the basic purpose of your deck is for entertaining, and to help you relax.  Any lighting for decks that you install should be appropriate to these purposes.  Don't settle for a few strategically based bulbs.  Instead, use lights that set the right mood, don't offer too much glare, and are set up in such a way as to allow you privacy.

Lighting is just as important as many of the other, more obvious features of your deck.  However, it's easy to forget about it, since good lighting for decks shouldn't be noticeable at all.  To make sure you don't notice your deck lighting from a maintenance perspective, choose high quality fixtures that are well built.  It might cost a little more, but in the long run, you won't have to spend as much time replacing and repairing them, so you can enjoy yourself.
